Immigration Ban Prompts Worries, Protest at TTU

President Trump's executive action on immigration and travel has sparked worry for international students at Texas Tech.

KAMC's Alyssa Goard reports.

Immigration Ban Prompts Worries, Protest at TTU

Of mister trump's security move..

Is being seen at texas tech..

Where at least one scholar has been un-able to return to lubbock.

Kamc's 'alyssa goard' joins us live, near campus with more tonight..

Alyssa?

Wes bryan, texas tech says they have 149 students from the 7 countries listed on the order.

None of the deadly jihadist attacks in the us in recent years have been committed by people from those countries.

But the ban remains, and hits close to home for several red raiders.

Mousab diab// ttu student, us citizen born in sudan gheif mehdawi // ttu student born in libya, us green card holder ambassador tibor nagy vice provost of international affairs, ttu sara alhaj // texas tech student citizen in u.s. and syria senior studying cell molecular biology, hea mousab diab// ttu student, us citizen born in sudan i felt really really frustrated by the whole thing, a lot of families their lives were torn apart by this ordinance by the stroke of a pen president trumps executive order impacted lives around the globe... including these texas tech students gheif mehdawi // ttu student born in libya, us green card holder cause it effected me because i haven't seen my family in 3 years especially my brother and my sister i haven't seen them nmaybe since 2014 2012 since they came bhere and i miss them and want them to see my son and they want to see him gheith medawi holds a green card, his family was planning to come from libya in two weeks to meet his baby.

Those plans are now canceled, and his plans to intern in brazil this summer are on hold.

But it's still scary, but it's not definite i still want to ask an immigration attorney i want to make sure everythigng is right because no one knows, with trump no one knows mousab diab has cousins and friends who now are limited in where they can travel..

We have to celebrate diversity and thats what makes america great, detaining people deporting people who are here legally, tha'ts not making america great at all what went through my mind i can't imagine being able to not visit syria, or my dad or my family are not american citizens, myi don't know whats going to happen what's going to happen with their applicaions for green cards sara alhaj is a dual citizen in the us and syria says the restrictions for her and her family members are unclear whenever syrians or anyone are comign hhere most of them are coming here to start over because their country did not provide that for them, because of any disaster thats there, thats what i don't understand, why the specific list?

Ambassador tibor nagy worries that these fears are exactly what will hurt the community of international students at texas tech... and the country as a whole ambassador tibor nagy vice provost of international affairs, ttu it will certainly sent a chilling message across all international categories and looking at it again as a retired us ambassador i remember how often i spoke with my colleagues that international students coming to the us is one of the best ways to ensure the long term security of the united states of america.

These international students left wondering about their own security basically you'll struggle in the airports and be a red flag for i don't know how many years even if they cancel the executive order, alyssa all of the students i spoke with said they're comforted by the efforts around all of the students i spoke with said they're comforted by the efforts around the world of people to call question to the executive order.

There's actually a march being held here in lubbock tomorrow and all of the students i spoke with say they hope to attend it's tomorrow evening at the tim cole memorial.

It's called "no bans - no walls".

The organizer is a mechanical engineering student from turkey..

Who's at texas tech earning his p-h-d.

He moved here four years ago..

And says during the protest..

He'll be thinking about all his friends who are currently worried about their status here in the u-s.

(cagri bakirci/ no bans no walls lubbock organizer) "the lubbock police department, interfaith associations, religious associations, churches, student clubs, political organizations, they are all supporting this..

And it shows that there is actually a unified response."

Alyssa everyone is invited to come out here tomorrow.

Event organizers say this is a family friendly peaceful protest..

It starts at six.
