China plans national security laws for Hong Kong after pro-democracy unrest: report

China will propose national security legislation for Hong Kong in response to last year's often violent pro-democracy protests that plunged the city into its deepest turmoil since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997, a newspaper said on Thursday.

Hong Kong could host mainland intelligence bases
A Chinese proposal to impose national security laws on Hong Kong could see mainland intelligence agencies set up bases there, raising fears of direct law enforcement and what U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called a โ€œdeath knellโ€ for the cityโ€™s autonomy. Olivia Chan reports.
