The investigation into alleged collusion between Russian agents and US President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign has recently come to an end. The final report, summarized by Attorney General William Barr, advised that there was no evidence that alleged collusion had occurred. Under pressure from Democrats and the public, AG Barr has now released a redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, which weighs in at 400 pages. But what does the released report tell us?

Mueller’s investigation, according to details made public, found that President Trump could not be cleared of obstructing justice at any point during the period researched. The report, according to CNN, advises that it is impossible to determine that ‘no criminal conduct occurred’. The redacted file also states that while Trump campaign members knew of the benefits from colluding with Russia, such steps weren’t taken.

Perhaps most importantly for Democrats and for Congress, the report states that investigations may continue with regard to the President and alleged obstruction of justice. After two years of investigation, the report’s delivery appears to be bringing a dramatic turn in the Trump Presidency to an end. However, Democrats continue to press for legal intervention in bringing the full report to light.

“With the Special Counsel’s fact-gathering work concluded, it is now Congress’ responsibility to assess the findings and evidence and proceed accordingly,” a statement offered by five chairs of the House Democratic Committee states. It has been stated that Congress will have access to more information than the wider public, however, it is likely that Democrats will continue to push forward with their subpoena to release the full text.

A number of moments revealed by the redacted report have been widely seized upon by the mass media. One particular moment disclosed was Trump’s reaction to Mueller being appointed as Special Counsel – “This is the end of my Presidency, I’m f***ed,” he is alleged to have remarked.

According to Reuters, Don McGahn, White House Counsel, refused to fire Mueller on Trump’s request. Mueller’s report suggests that Trump wished for the Special Counsel to be removed on the grounds of ‘conflict of interest’.

Other details revealed include the fact that Trump had privately requested that his campaign aides find emails said to have been deleted by Hillary Clinton at the height of a related scandal. This came after Trump had publicly requested that Russia hack into her emails at a press conference in July 2016.

The Mueller Report has been revealed – but how much of it will remain secret? If the Democrats succeed with their legal challenge, there could be much more to come.
