Happy New Year! Let’s kick off 2019 by taking a look back at some of the most interesting and important moments in our distant past. Let’s travel back years, decades, centuries and more – to unearth historical titbits to share for many moons to come.

December 31st, 1904 – The First Times Square Celebration
When you think of big New Year’s Eve celebrations, you surely think of Times Square, New York – right? Back in 1904, revellers headed to Longacre Square (since renamed) in NYC for the first time to ring in the new year – with a promising 1905 ahead.
Famous Birthday: Donna Summer (Disco Legend), 1948 - 2012

January 1st, 1863 – The Emancipation Proclamation
The start of 1863 was also the start of a social revolution in the US. On this day, then-President Abraham Lincoln would issue the Emancipation Proclamation in order to free slaves then-held in confederate states across the nation.
Famous Birthday: Morris Chestnut (Actor), 50

January 2nd, 1906 – Cool Down!
Summers from 1906 onwards would certainly start to get a lot cooler – as a patent for the first air conditioner was received on this day 113 years ago. Where would we be without it – sweltering, perhaps!
Famous Birthday: Isaac Asimov (Science Fiction Legend), 1920 - 1992

January 3rd, 1987 – Aretha Franklin Makes Hall of Fame History
We sadly lost the Queen of Soul in 2018 – but it’s worth noting that Aretha Franklin made Rock & Roll Hall of Fame history by being the first female inductee 32 years ago today.
Famous Birthday: Michael Schumacher (F1 Legend), 50

January 4th, 1961 – The Longest Strike Ever Comes to an End
Workers still go on strike for weeks, maybe even months to demand better conditions and more rights – but have you ever known a strike go on for decades? In 1961, Danish barbers’ assistants finally agreed to end their strike action after a staggering 33 year stalemate.
Famous Birthday: Grace Bumbry (Opera Singer), 82

January 5th, 1940 – A Change for Radio
While old-school radio transmission may seem a little outdated thanks to DAB standards, FM radio only celebrates its 79th birthday this week – and it’s still widely used!
Famous Birthday: Diane Keaton (Actor), 73

January 6th, 1975 – Spin the Wheel!
One of the most iconic US TV gameshows celebrates its 44th anniversary this week – as Wheel of Fortune first debuted on NBC back in 1975, and shows absolutely no sign of leaving us any time soon.
Famous Birthday: Rowan Atkinson (Actor), 64
