It’s our last look back at the news in brief for 2018 – and, unsurprisingly, it’s been a week crammed full of drama and headline-grabbing action as any other that has come to pass this year. Will 2019 be quite so dramatic? Let’s wait and see – but for now, if you’ve been too busy revelling this holiday season to check up on the news, here’s our pick of the biggest stories.

Trump’s Shutdown Continues
US President Donald Trump appeared to mark the holidays by shutting down the government, at least partially – as the White House awaits funding of $5 billion to be able to build a wall between the US and Mexico. Trump’s wall has been a symbolic pledge through his campaign and well into his Presidency – and as it looks right now, the government could be set to remain partially closed until 2019. Where will this latest saga end?

Kevin Spacey Faces Assault Charges
Kevin Spacey, the Hollywood actor who was one of many big names to face accusations of a sexual nature at the height of #MeToo in late 2017, has this week been charged with indecent assault and battery with regard to an encounter with an 18-year-old male in the summer of 2016. It is reported, too, that the complainant supposedly has Snapchat video evidence of part of Spacey’s behavior on the evening in question. Spacey seemingly responded to claims with a video which has been referred to as ‘bizarre’ by a number of media outlets.

Black Mirror’s ‘Bandersnatch’ – Breaking New TV Ground?
Black Mirror, the darkly futuristic anthology series currently helmed at Netflix, marked the festive season by unveiling an unnerving new experience. The feature-length ‘Bandersnatch’ is an interactive adventure, where viewers are able to unlock multiple plot strands and endings based on the choices they make. It falls in line with the plot, as it centers on the creation of an adventure video game in 1984. It’s been critically well-received – and One News Page will have its verdict for you shortly.

Instagram Accidentally Makes Big Changes – And Reverses Them
Why is it that so many of our social networks and apps have to change so often? Instagram, which has been relying upon its current, popular interface and swiping system for some time now, appeared to unveil a new model for certain users. Some users found themselves being required to swipe left or right instead of on a downward scroll – though the new interface has disappeared again. It’s been confirmed that the brief update was a test – but will it be rolled out across the board in months to come?
