Santa Claus is a legendary figure who is beloved by all across the world. Whether you know him as Kris Kringle, Father Christmas or as Pere Noel, the magical, jolly, bearded man who flies through the night delivering presents is an icon who will hopefully live forever for childhoods to come. It’s astounding quite how prevalent and long-standing Santa has become, too – your grandparents, and their grandparents, and their grandparents all likely waited for the big man to come down the chimney on Christmas Eve!
However, according to Distractify, a recent poll suggests that Santa Claus may be on his way to becoming fairly outdated, at least as far as gender identity is concerned. A survey undertaken by Graphic Springs, who polled at least 400 different people across the US and the UK (before questioning 4000 more), confirmed that up to 27% of those involved would like for Santa to either be female or gender neutral. It’s safe to say that – while barriers have certainly been broken down for female and/or neutral depictions in recent times, the thought of such measures applying to Santa may be a little controversial.

However, we do live in a modern age – and the questions offered during polling suggested that some would like for Saint Nick to account for his midnight break-ins by doing nice things for families – not just give them tons of presents and gifts! Others, meanwhile, thought that Santa could stand to upgrade his outfit, regardless of whether or not it would stand to benefit him in chillier climes up north.
23% of those polled even thought the iconic figure could do more by utilizing Amazon Prime – another telling outcome to fit the modern age!
Truth be told, Santa Claus is an icon who has weathered the years regardless of crazes, thoughts, feelings and otherwise – and it’s a testament to his enduring charm and legacy that he continues to be depicted as the same, jolly old soul. While it’s true that Coca-Cola helped to push the idea that he wears red as opposed to green in the west, his legend has otherwise remained untouched over decades of joy and generosity.
Many people will simply say that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – while others clearly seem to think Old Saint Nick should really get with the times. What do you think?
