December 24th, 1818 – ‘Silent Night’ Sung for the First Time
Perhaps the most iconic Christmas carol of all time, the sombre and celebratory Silent Night, composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, was performed for the first time publicly in Oberndorf, Austria 200 years ago this week.

Merry Christmas! Today of course played host to one of the most iconic and enduring moments in wartime history, where opposing British and German troops in the trenches during World War II set their differences aside for one day to play a friendly game of football and to revel in the celebrations. It is one of the most poignant moments in human history.

December 26th, 1860 – British Football’s Origins
The UK is home to some of the most intense and celebrated soccer – or football – matches on the planet. Inter-club football started here, too – as on this day in 1860, Sheffield FC and Hallam FC undertook the first matchup between club sides ever recorded. The game’s come a long way!

In other important global news, Texas was recognized as the 28th state of America on this day in 1845 – it’s been a week of historical importance for many people towards the south of North America.

What a way to close off the year! Edwin Hubble, an astronomer, revealed formally on this day 94 years ago that there are in fact other galaxies and systems out there waiting for us to discover. Yes – believe it or not – we’ve only been looking deeply at the stars for a relatively short time!
