More than 160 local kids Shop with a Cop for Christmas
More than 160 kids across Brown County checked off their Christmas lists with the help of local law enforcement. "This is a great program. Some families will only see this for their holidays,” said Brown County Sergeant Michael Calmes. “And it's not just that, its establishing that relationship with kids." Shop with a Cop is a program that pairs local officers with kids' whose families that have gone through some sort of financial struggle. While they only spend three to four hours together for breakfast, shopping and wrapping presents, those moments can make a lasting impact. "Not always do they get to see us in such a friendly light,” said Brown County Deputy Jim Dagneau. “It's something that you really wish throughout your career you can have those relationships where people come back two, three, four years later and say ‘I remember when’ and it's a positive experience they can relate back." Dagneau is a prime example of the lasting relationships formed with the kids. Two years ago, he was paired with now 11-year-old Thomas; and Thomas, "remembers when." That’s why he's back to help out. "It's like recruiting with a long lost family member, you haven't seen in a long time,” Thomas said. “Going back when you’re 8 [years old] and recreating that moment.” In the program’s 25th year, it’s the first time it’s being held at Wal-Mart. Shopko used to be the longtime partner until they closed, then they had to find new options. The money spent for the day all comes from donations; each child has a limit of about $140. "We always make sure they choose for their families first, because we want to make it about the giving,” Calmes said. "This is truly what Christmas is all about,” Dagneau added. “There's so much fake stuff going on in Christmas, but to see the joy with the kids and especially the kids interacting together its awesome." NBC26 is a proud sponsor of the event.
