The Apple iPad has undoubtedly led the way when it comes to tablet innovation over the past few years, and while there have been a few changes to the product line in recent times, it seems that the unit has taken something of a backseat to ongoing evolutions of the iPhone and other Apple brand products. Nevertheless, the hardware remains hugely popular, and, as such, many competitors are still working out ways to try and get that competitive edge on the evolving standard. Microsoft and Samsung are arguably not too far behind – but it’s safe to say that the iPad has remained king of the tablet devices for some time now.
This could be set to change as Microsoft have this week unveiled their direct answer to the current iPad line, with what they are announcing to be the Surface Go. Unlike other incarnations of the Surface, this new model will reportedly be smaller, more lightweight and – according to the brand – more accessible to enhance productivity on the go – hence the name! That’s not all – the Surface Go will apparently send something of a shockwave to the existing market as an affordable tablet bearing the Windows 10 operating system – it’s set to retail in the US for $399, which is reportedly half the price of previous Surface Pro tablets. Could this cheaper, lighter and more manageable model change the game for Microsoft?
“When we designed this device, we had to ask ourselves what people want and need from a 10” Surface,” chief Product Officer at Microsoft, Panos Panay, advised. “The answers seem obvious – lightweight, productive, and accessible to more people.”
“Surface Go is small and mighty, giving you the performance you need to be productive,” Panay confirmed. The new model reportedly offers nine hours of solid battery life from the get-go, meaning that it could also be a viable option for anyone looking to take their tablets away for several hours at a time. It’s also a two-in-one – with its own kickstand and keyboard, meaning that you can effectively transform the model back into a mini PC of sorts should you need to.
Microsoft’s Surface range seems to be getting more accessible – in a world where tablets seem to be overtaking laptops for ease of use, it’s high time the brand stepped up to Apple’s plate – let’s see if this new iteration is a game-changer!
