Chloroquine And Hydroxychloroquine Could Pose Higher COVID-19 Death Risk
According to UPI, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine has no clinical benefit for people with COVID-19. A study published in The Lancet on Friday says that the drugs might actually cause serious heart-related side effects. The study of 15,000 patients found increased rate of heart-related side effects, when taking either drug to treat COVID-19. Data found that people in the study taking the drugs to treat the virus were twice as likely to die than those in the control group, which received standard care. Dr. Mandeep R. Mehra, co-author of the study and executive director of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Advanced Heart Disease in Boston said, "This is the first large-scale study to find statistically robust evidence that treatment with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine does not benefit patients with COVID-19." Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are used to treat malaria Both drugs have been touted by President Donald Trump, and others like Elon Musk, as a potential COVID-19 treatment.
