Marvel Studios May Not Be Releasing New X-Men Movies for ‘A Very Long Time’

The recent takeover of 20th Century Fox by Disney earlier this year answered many comic book movie fans’ prayers. The acquisition of the studio will now mean that properties such as the Fantastic Four, Deadpool and the X-Men can now be dissolved into the wider Marvel Studios brand, and therefore the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, according to an interview Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige took part in with io9 recently, any plans to bring X-Men into the MCU may be further away than some fans are hoping. With Avengers: Endgame set for release as of April 26th, it’s no surprise that viewers are waiting to see what comes next with avid speculation. But they’ll need to wait for some time when it comes to seeing Professor X, Wolverine and others be integrated into the stable.

“It’ll be a while,” Feige confirmed. “It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set [the Fox deal].”

“So really it’s much more, for us, less about the specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.”

By long, it certainly seems that Feige may be referring to beyond 2024. The so-called five-year plan which the studio head discussed encompasses plans for Black Widow, The Eternals, Doctor Strange 2 and many more Marvel movies yet to be added to the stable. “The slate that we’re building over the next five years [is] not apples to apples,” Feige confirmed, referring to the next ‘phase’ of Marvel movies. “It is two very distinct things and I hope they’ll feel very distinct.”

“But there is a similar mentality going into it, which is ‘How can we continue to tell stories with some of the characters that audiences already know and love in a unique way, in a different way, in a surprising way, of which we have a lot of plans and ideas and work already going into it?’ ‘How can we introduce new characters that even hardcore fans, comic fans, have barely known or barely heard of?’ – that’s really exciting, too.”

Avengers: Endgame will hit theaters across the US as of April 26th 2019, and will reportedly bring a close to the current run of Marvel movies.
