Stuart Attwell is once again at the heart of a VAR storm after controversially disallowing a goal from Wolves – just days following the uproar over Nottingham Forest's match at Everton.

Attwell, 41, was the VAR official in charge at Stockley Park when Forest lost 2-0 to relegation rivals Everton at Goodison Park, with the away team irate after being denied what they believed were three clear penalties.

The Premier League club later issued a statement, expressing their previous concerns about Attwell due to his alleged support for their relegation rivals, Luton.

On Wednesday night, Attwell was back on duty, this time as the on-field referee for the Wolves vs Bournemouth match at Molineux. Several of his first-half decisions had infuriated the home fans, who saw their team deservedly go down to an Antoine Semenyo goal.

However, Gary O'Neil's team thought they had clawed their way back into the game in the 65th minute when Nelson Semedo set up Hwange Hee-chan to head home a powerful goal. But, after a long review, Attwell was advised to check the pitchside monitor for a possible foul.

Attwell's decision not to rule out the goal sparked another wave of fury from the Molineux crowd, who have seen a string of decisions go against them this season.

Earlier this month, in their home game against West Ham, an injury-time equaliser was disallowed, leading to O'Neil tearing into officials so fiercely that he was later charged by the Football Association, reports the Mirror.

Next, it was Bournemouth's turn to be irked at Attwell after he showed Milos Kerkez a straight red for a high tackle on Matt Doherty. Once again, there was a lengthy check from VAR Darren England, but this time it was decided that the original decision would stand.

Nottingham Forest were incensed with the officiating during their 2-0 defeat to Everton - with Stuart Atwell on VAR

The FA has already launched an investigation into Forest's comments about Attwell following their social media statement released minutes after the final whistle.

"Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept. We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn't change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.

"The Premier League was extremely disappointed to read the comments made by Nottingham Forest on social media yesterday, following its match against Everton. We note The FA has confirmed it will be investigating the club's statement.

"It is never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials, and the nature of these comments means the Premier League will also be investigating the matter in relation to the League's Rules."
