Bajwa slams AAP govt for poor law and order ahead of polls

CHANDIGARH: Leader of opposition (LoP) in Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party-led state govt for its “failure” to maintain law and order ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
“Even though DGP Gaurav Yadav, after the announcement of the elections, had ensured that the elections would be conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful atmosphere, the state’s law and order situation doesn’t seem to be improving.All these claims have proven to be hollow,” said Bajwa.
Citing a “shameful incident” in which gangsters helped their accomplice Charanjit Singh alias Raju escape from Tarn Taran Civil Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment, the senior leader said the incident highlighted the ineffectiveness of the police under the two-year rule of the AAP govt.
Bajwa also pointed out the increasing incidents of snatching and looting in the state and cited examples of a woman dragged by snatchers in Jalandhar and another woman being looted in Mohali.
The Congress leader questioned whether such an atmosphere could be conducive for free, fair, and peaceful elections.
He also asked chief minister Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the home portfolio, to clarify his priorities – whether he intends to work diligently to improve the law and order situation or continue as a star campaigner for the AAP.
Bajwa accused the Mann govt of surrendering to criminals, with gun crime and drug trade on the rise since the AAP assumed power in Punjab. Even AAP MLA from Amritsar North, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, has pointed towards an alleged nexus between the AAP leaders, police officials, and drug peddlers, said Bajwa.
