Louis Rees-Zammit is set to achieve his NFL dream by signing for Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs.

The former Rugby Union star - who many regarded as one of the best players in the world - stunned the rugby world in January when announcing his departure from the sport to pursue a career in the NFL.

The 23-year-old took up a place on the NFL international player pathway (IPP) and impressed NFL scouts as he held a number of contract meetings with several NFL franchises but looks to have agreed terms with the Chiefs on a training contract worth $700,000 (£555,000), according to the Daily Mail.

While a deal is yet to be signed between the two parties, the Welshman is expected to pen a contract with the team on Friday (March 29) where he'll become a team-mate of NFL greats Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, with the latter recently rising in fame thanks to his relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift.

The former wing is expected to sign a training contract with the two-time defending Super Bowl champion as he'll hope to impress head coach Andy Reid enough to become a permanent member of the squad for the new NFL season in September.

The departure of the rugby union star was a shock for the sport

Rees-Zammit is thought to play in both the running back and wide receiver positions, giving Patrick Mahomes yet another option in the stacked attacking positions of the Chiefs.

The Penarth native Rees-Zammit visited the likes of the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos as his tremendous pace and power impressed scouts.

While several rugby players have attempted to make the move to the NFL, Rees-Zammit could prove to be the most successful of all and will find no better team than the Chiefs who are hoping to achieve historic heights with a third consecutive Super Bowl this upcoming season.
