A boat carrying three fishermen reportedly capsized in the Arabian sea off the Versova coast in Mumbai, officials said on Sunday, reported the PTI.


In the incident one of the fishermen was killed and another went missing, while the third person swam to safety, an official told the PTI on Sunday.


The trio set out in the boat for fishing from Devachiwadi in Versova area between 8 pm and 9 pm on Saturday, he said.


The boat overturned, about two-three km from the seashore, the official said quoting local people and police.

One of the three persons, identified as Vijay Bamania (35), swam to safety, he said.

The official said as per local people, the other two persons were identified as Usmani Bhandari (22) and Vinod Goel (45).

"The body of Vinod Goel was found on Sunday afternoon during the search operation while Usmani Bhandari is missing," a Mumbai Fire Brigade official added.

He said the search operation was suspended post-afternoon due to high tides.

Various agencies including Fire Brigade, police, the Navy, lifeguards and a helicopter were involved in the search operation.

Meanwhile, three members of a family drowned while bathing in a river here on Sunday.

According to the PTI, Arayankavu resident Johnson (59), his nephew Aloshi (17) and neice Jismol (15) got caught in the undercurrents in the Muvattupuzha river here and drowned, police said.

The other family members who had accompanied them to bathe in the river are safe, they said.

The incident took place around 11.30 AM.

The locals and authorities were alerted about the incident by the family members and the bodies were recovered after a two-hour long search, police said. 

In an another incident, a 16-year-old girl hailing from Madikeri drowned after she was washed away by powerful waves at Malpe beach in Udupi district Saturday night, police sources said, reported the PTI.

The deceased has been identified as Manya. She had come along with her friend Yashaswini (16) from Madikeri to the beach.

Police officials said that the two girls were washed away into the sea, and that the Malpe lifeguard team rushed to bring them back to shore. Manya died on the way to the hospital while her friend is now under treatment and stated to be out of danger.

The two girls had left their homes three days ago and spent time at Panambur beach in Mangaluru before reaching Malpe on Saturday evening, sources said.
Police said that a missing case was registered two days ago at Madikeri police station in Kodagu district with regard to the girls.
