One dead in gang war outside Bijnor jail, 2 cops injured

BIJNOR: Two men - Vishal Sharma and Raunak Singh - allegedly associated with a criminal gang reached Bijnor jail on Friday night around 8.30 pm to kill a member of a rival gang, identified as Rajan Kumar, 24, an accused in an attempt-to-murder case.
In the shootout that ensured, one man lost his life and two policemen were injured.
According to Bijnor SP Neeraj Kumar Jadaun, Kumar was released on bail on Friday and when he stepped out of the jail premises, Sharma and Singh opened fire at him using countrymade weapons.Some of Kumar's men who had come to the jail to receive him retaliated. In the cross-firing, Sharma died on the spot.Two police personnel who came to Kumar's rescue sustained bullet injuries.
Jadaun said, "During probe it has come to light that Kumar and Singh, who used to work in Haridwar, had a rivalry which escalated when they returned to their respective native places. Kumar, in a bid to instill fear, had allegedly fired at Singh's residence. This incident left Singh deeply enraged, fueling his desire for revenge. That is why he along with his associate Vishal Sharma hatched a plan to eliminate Rajan and reached the jail."
The injured cops have been identified as assistant sub-inspector Ranjeet Singh and constable Rajeev Kumar.
"The two police personnel have been admitted to district hospital for treatment," said the SP.
Police said Singh was arrested and sent to jail on Saturday. Two countrymade pistols, 10 live cartridges, a mobile phone and a bike were recovered from the spot.
The two gangs, with members in their early 20s, have emerged recently on police radar. Search is on for other members of the gang.
